Silent guardians

Isabelle looked outside the small plane's window. It was a private plane for researchers to fly to Easter Island. It was still around an hour until the landing. Isabelle always wanted to go there, so when her boss announced that's her next destination, she forgot her sleep deprivation and ran home to pack. Thankfully, it was quite a long flight so she slept on the plane. She was blessed with the ability to sleep anywhere.

Isabelle felt like reading something but she didn't take any books for the trip. She decided to play a game on her smartphone. Just as she was about to fight the boss, a stewardess approached with a smile and asked her to turn off her phone as they were about to land. They landed without complications, Isabelle took her small bag and stepped outside after thanking the stewardess for all her trouble.

The main archaeologist greeted her warmly: "Isabelle! I knew they would send you on this job!"

"Julia!" Isabelle opened her arms for the hug. "I can't believe they made you the head archaeologist here!"

"Why? Am I so terrible?" Julia pulled back and started poking Isabelle.

"What? No! Stop! Stoooop!" Isabelle exclaimed while laughing and trying to push away from Julia as she was VERY ticklish.

"Alright. We can have a tie. This time." Julia said. "So, do you want to go unpack?"
Isabelle fixed her bag on the shoulder and looked willingly to Julia "Can I see them?" her eyes widened.

Julia laughed. "You haven't changed a bit. Still work before rest. Come on."

"It's not work if you like doing it." Isabelle said while walking behind Julia.

"True true. It's a good thing you don't have to walk a lot. There they are." Julia showed her to the long row of Easter Island "people".

"Wooooooow." Isabelle exclaimed. "They look amaaaaazing! I mean, I saw the pictures, but woooow." she stood in awe.

"Yes. I am so lucky to get to work with them. But seriously, go unpack and I'll show you something even better."

"What can be better than this?" Isabelle looked at Julia with a raised eyebrow.

"Youuuu'll see. I can't spoil the surprise now." Julia smiled. "Now c'mon, I'll take you to the place you'll be staying these days." and they started walking towards the houses. There was a little hostel where Isabelle's boss rented out. She hated hotels and always stayed in hostels as that would let her feel the place vibe better. She checked-in, went to her room, put the bags down, returned to the front entrance and could hardly contain herself.

"Show me, show me, show me!!" She started jumping around Julia.

"Alright, let's go back to the Moai."

They approached them and Julia showed Isabelle the digging site. They have uncovered Moai legs and Isabelle was jumping around snapping pictures with her smartphone. She listened as Julia was telling about the works and progress. It was slowly going towards the evening so they decided to go have a nice meal. They had some fish cooked on grill. While eating Isabelle noticed Julia got lost in thoughts a few times and got a serious, a bit sad expression on her face.

"What's the matter?" Isabelle asked and couldn't help herself: "Is something fishy?" she asked while snickering.

Julia smiled and shook her head. It seemed as if she was discussing something in her mind. Finally she decided. "I have to show you something."

"Ok, what is it?"

"Come with me." Julia said and stood up from the table. Isabelle quickly followed her. They went back to the Maoi site and next to the one with uncovered legs. Julia climbed down in the whole again and looked at the sky. The moon was covered with a passing cloud.

"What did you want to show me?" Isabelle asked while climbing down.

"Come here and look." Julia showed a specific place on Maoi's leg. The cloud passed and the moon shone right in the place Julia was pointing. It appeared to be something shaped like a letter L.

"Woooooooow! What is that?" Isabelle asked.

"Well, you want to see something really cool?" Julia smiled as Isabelle nodded enthusiastically. Julia grabbed Isabelle's hand and they both pressed the sign. They didn't feel any change and for a second Isabelle didn't understand what happened. That is until she looked up. They were in a cave full of ships around them.

"Where are we?" she asked while looking around.

"Well here's the funny part." Julia said. "According to my GPS, we are in the western part of North Pacific ocean, a place which is said to not exist and is not even acknowledged by most science people. We are at Devil's Triangle or Bermuda Triangle."

"What?! Well, that explains the ships." Isabelle said while walking around. "Have you showed your science people about this?"

"I would, but it keeps appearing and reappearing rarely and oddly. I tried calculating the days, nights, weather forecasts, but it's like it has a mind of its own. I wasn't even sure it would appear today!"

"Well, I guess it was my lucky day." Isabelle said while snatching pictures. "Do we go back the same way?"

"Yeah."

"Ok, wait just a bit. I want to look around." Isabelle went around taking photos. She photographed ships, some sad skeletons, some yachts and boats. "Hm, there aren't a lot of people here for such an amount of ships. Do you think they went to Easter Island?"

"Well, some of the ships disappeared not so long ago. I think it would have been all over the news." Julia said.

"So where did they go?" Isabelle turned around and started heading back.

"I guess this will be another mystery." Julia said and they both pressed the L. In seconds they were back on the island and the sign disappeared.

"That was so weird." Isabelle said while climbing out.

Julia lead Isabelle back to her hostel, where she fell asleep instantly. She stuck around for a few more days writing about the digging and work and of course Maoi. She was disappointed to see that the pictures where all blurred out and she couldn't show anything to anyone. They were mostly shadows and unrecognizable forms.

On her last day, before she went back to the site with Julia. The sign on the leg was still gone. After saying goodbyes she boarded the plane and fell in her seat. The plane soon took off. Isabelle knew she should get some sleep, but she couldn't stop thinking about the Maoi: the silent guardians standing like towers over secrets they can't share.
